Abstract
Science is a process that devours its offsprings like Chronos, the Greek god of time, and after “The Future of Asian Health”, “Nutrigenomics 2006”, “Health Benefits of Plant Polyphenols”, “New Horizons in Chinese Medicines & Health Foods”, we are moving into critical territory with “Promoting Good Health and Developing a Sustainable Environment”. Indeed, Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta are concerned with the deleterious effects of pollution on health, and the exhaustion of resources. These are the areas we selected since they are of growing concern in Hong Kong and Asia. We intend to show you that teams, in Hong Kong and elsewhere, have addressed these issues for decades, embraced them with passion, and already have some solutions for the most critical problems. As you probably know, the Department of Applied Biology of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is in charge of the government-supported BSc in Food Safety and Technology; we will explore in more detail the safety issues of food, “health foods”/
nutraceuticals, Chinese medicine and more. Water purification and water & environment pollution will be given a whole day tomorrow.
We are very happy to welcome world experts who have, despite their very busy schedule, accepted to discuss and share with us their knowledge. We are also proud to showcase the findings of some of our faculty; their research is admirable in safety, use of ozone, toxicity of methyl-mercury, or red tide.
Since the field we intend to cover is immense, and time is very limited, we offer you again an extended Poster session where you will discover most exciting presentations by young researchers; do not miss the Poster session –and remember that lunch will be provided there! This Symposium offers a unique opportunity of interaction between scientists, business people, governmental agencies, and students. We hope that you will enjoy the Symposium.
