Healthy life style promotion improves cardiometabolic markers in perimpenopausal women with abdominal obesity

Background and aims: To assess the effect of the Mediterranean diet (MD) pattern on lipid profile, inflammatory markers, and markers of oxidative stress in perimenopausal women with abdominal obesity Material and methods: Ninety women (48±3 years) with abdominal obesity (Waist circumference 105.48±12.33cm) were randomly assigned to two groups: 45 received nutritional counseling in accordance with MD and the practice of regular activity for 8 weeks, and 45 women were used as controls. At baseline (T0) and 8 weeks after the initiating of nutritional intervention (T8), we assessed cadriometabolic biomarkers. Results: In the intervention group compared to the control group after 8 weeks of nutritional counselling, no significant differences were noted in glycemia and triacylglcerol concentrations. Total cholesterol concentrations were decreased (p<0.01), LDL-C remained unchanged and the TC/HDL-C ratio was diminished (p<0.05). CRP values remained unchanged. A decrease in TNF-α amounts was noted (p<0.01). The level of lipid oxidative products (MDA) was decreased (p<0.001) while carbonyls concentrations remained unchanged. An increase was noted (p<0.05) in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. Thiol values were enhanced (p<0.001). Conclusions: MD pattern improves dyslipidemia, inflammation and oxidative stress and represent the best choice to manage cardiometabolic risk and prevent cardiovascular disease in perimenopausal women.
