Abstract.
Background and aim:
Job stress is very common around the world and threatens the physical and mental well-being of employees. Job stress is experienced when there is a perceived imbalance between job demands and available resources. Since 2016, the Ministry of Education in Morocco began recruiting teachers under contracts. Contract teachers may experience increased stress and anxiety due to the uncertainty of their employment status. Burnout is a consequence of the prolonged accumulation of stress factors. It is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion. Perhaps ignorance of its causes, symptoms and prevention methods are factors contributing to its spread. Compared to other professions, teachers are more likely to experience burnout. The purpose of the present study was to conduct a randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an eight-week cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in reducing burnout and improving psychological flexibility among Moroccan contract teachers, the technique used is group counseling.
Methods:
Our study sample consisted of 51 among newly recruited contractual teachers in the KHEMISSET region. We assigned participants to CBT group (N = 25) and control group (N = 26) using random sampling techniques. Two instruments were used to collect data for the study. The Acceptance and Action Questionnaire – version 2 (AAQ-II), was used to measure psychological flexibility, while The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was served to measure the burnout. The intervention consisted of an eight-week cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Follow-up data were collected after 3 months of intervention.
Results:
Results revealed a reduction in burnout levels and an increase in psychological flexibility significantly at post-test and follow-up assessments following CBT intervention.
Conclusions: CBT allowed contract teachers to change their perception of the work environment and to better manage stressful situations and somatic complaints (www.actabiomedica.it)
