Investigation of cough and its influence factors in a group of Chinese patients with Interstitial Lung Diseases

Abstract

Background: Data on the incidence and health burden of cough and the factors influencing it in Chinese patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are limited.

Objectives: To address this knowledge gap, we designed this cross-sectional study to investigate cough, the factors influencing cough and its impact on quality of life in Chinese ILDs.

Methods: ILDs diagnosed in the Respiratory Department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital from January 2017 to December 2019 were recruited for this study. The Leicester Cough Questionnaire was used to evaluate the severity of cough, the Short-Form 36-item Questionnaire and the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire was used to assess the patients’ quality of life. Regression analysis was used to determine the factors influencing cough and its severity.

Results: Cough was more common in patients (39.7% of the 363 ILDs) with a long disease duration, severe pulmonary dysfunction, extensive pulmonary interstitial changes, and a poor prognosis. The fibrosis score had an obvious association with cough. The total score on the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire in patients with cough was increased obviously, and the physical component score on the Short-Form 36-item Questionnaire was dramatically decreased.

Conclusions: Cough and severe cough are common in Chinese ILDs and obviously affect their quality of life. Cough is affected by multiple factors, the most important of which is fibrosis, and the ILD-GAP is the major indicator associated with the severity of cough.
