Sono state somministrate silhouette charts (immagini corporee) ed i rispettivi questionari (FRS – Figure Rating Scale; BIA-O – Body Image Assessment for Obesity).
Evaluation of body image in diet therapy: preliminary study
Summary
Purpose: the aim of this study is to assess the validity and the repeatability of silhouette charts to estimate body dissatisfaction and expectations regarding the diet. Methods: 25 young women (18-50 years old) with a Body Mass Index (BMI) range of 18-45 Kg/m2 were enrolled. Body weight and height were measured and BMI calculated. The body image was assessed by using silhouette charts (body images marked by an increasing number) and respective questionnaires (FRS-Figure Rating Scale; BIA-O-Body Image Assessment for Obesity). Results: the population was divided in three groups according to BMI: 18-24 Kg/m2, 25-30 Kg/m2, 31-45 Kg/m2. It has been observed that body mass index increasing is to the increase in the number of the figures chosen by patients that represent the current, the ideal and the realistic body measurements. At the same time, there is an increase of discrepancy values. Conclusions: the silhouette charts, to assess the body image, represent a potentially useful method to classify body dissatisfaction by each individual, obese or underweight. Moreover, if associated to psychometric questionnaires, the silhouette charts represent a good method to assess eating behavior during dietary treatment.
